09 April 2019

A Queen’s 2008 MSc in Leadership for Sustainable Development graduate, Bonnie Anley, has been appointed non-executive chair of the Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service for a four-year term running from 1 April 2019 until 31 March 2023.

The Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service is an independent special agency of the Department of Health and exists to fully supply the needs of all hospitals and clinical units in the province with safe and effective blood and blood products and other related services.

The NI Blood Transfusion Service is managed by a Board of Directors which is made up of three non-executive directors, a Chair and an Interim Chief Executive.

The role carries a time commitment of 2 days per month and attracts an annual remuneration of £7,370.

Chair of Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners since February 2014, Ms Anley has had an active role in the governance of Trust Ports for 12 years. With almost 20 years of experience at senior management level, she has worked in the community, not-for-profit and NGO sectors, and for public and private organisations, primarily in the transport industry. She worked as a Director in the transport sector for 18 years largely based at Warrenpoint Port.

Originally from the Kilkeel area in County Down and one of three children, Ms Anley attended King's Hospital School in Dublin, which includes Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar among its former pupils.

An MA graduate of Trinity College Dublin (1988) where she studied English, Ms Anley holds an MSc from Queen’s University Belfast, is a Chartered Director and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors and a member of the IoD Northern Ireland Committee.

After a spell in London at the Financial Times in the early 1990s, she returned to Northern Ireland on the sudden death of her father to take over the family’s business interests in Warrenpoint.

Now living in Banbridge, Ms Anley is a Director of Mourne Country Park Limited and of Friends of the Earth Limited; she is also a Trustee of Friends of the Earth Trust.
