SAYING A HUGE THANKS TO THE UNIVERSITY'S DONORS AND VOLUNTEERS

04 March 2020

Copies of Donor News, Queen’s dedicated publication for its growing army of supporters, are currently on their way to around 8,000 donors and volunteers around the world, highlighting the impact of philanthropy on the University’s students and researchers, during the past year.

Published by the Development and Alumni Relations Office on behalf of The Queen’s University of Belfast Foundation, the 24-page magazine is a review of fundraising activities in Northern Ireland and beyond during 2018/19, which brought in over £5.2m.

One hundred per cent of all monies raised by the Foundation – plus any Gift Aid received – goes directly to the intended cause at the University.

The Donor News reflects how graduates, trusts and foundations, companies and businesses (both local and international) – and non-alumni benefactors – are making an important difference to those currently studying on campus and carrying out world-class cutting-edge research at Queen’s.

Referring to the University’s donors and supporters in his welcome remarks, Professor Ian Greer, President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s said: ‘Your support enables us to make an impact locally, nationally and globally and your continued commitment helps drive the University forward.

‘Whatever your motivations for giving, you are providing our students – now and in the future – with the best experience and finest education possible, and advancing research which will benefit so many.’

Professor Greer concluded by saying: ‘As a new donor to Queen’s I am hugely grateful to all those who support this University.’

The current issue of Donor News reflects on another successful fundraising year and features details of three-times Queen’s graduate and recent appointee to the School of Law, Andrew Godden, who has set up a prize to support a student from a ‘widening participation’ background (pp4-5), and scholarship funder and former Ireland Rugby Captain Rob Saunders, (pp8-9).

Plus, in the volunteering section, (pp10-11), we reveal the winner of the Volunteer of the Year and hear how three graduates returned to the University to share their career experiences with current students.

In Health Fundraising News (pp14-15), find out how Limavady woman Julie Loughery held a charity BBQ and raised a staggering £60,000 to support breast cancer research; how a 6th formers’ Quiz Night raised £1,020 for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) research, and how you helped raise the £2m necessary for Queen’s to start work on the new KN Cheung SK Chin Intersim Centre, the University’s state-of-the-art clinical skills training centre.

Elsewhere in this edition, read how sport is helping to fund research into Parkinson’s disease, plus prostate and ovarian cancers (pp16-17), catch up with the latest on fundraising for our Pathway Opportunity Programme, the University’s highly acclaimed Widening Participation initiative (pp18-19) and find out about Moira Dunbar, Artic scientist and generous legacy benefactor (pp20-21).

As Editor Gerry Power points out, Donor News is a publication which not only acknowledges all those 1,400+ individuals who supported the University in the last year but is one that also highlights the enormous importance of philanthropy. “Donor News gives Queen’s a chance to say a huge thank you – on behalf of all those students and academic staff – who have benefitted directly from the wide range of generous gifts of time and money received by the University in the last year,” he said.

“It is also a demonstration of the impact of – and the continuing need for – philanthropic giving right across the University.

“Without the 7,742 gifts (which is slightly up on last year’s figure), from the 1,430 donors who contributed £5.2m in the last year, much of the world-class research carried at Queen’s may not have been possible.”
