NHS HIGHLAND APPOINTS QUEEN’S GRADUATE AS MEDICAL DIRECTOR

28 August 2019

Dr Boyd Peters, MB BCh BAO (1988) FRCGP, who lives in Grantown on Spey near Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands, has been appointed as the Medical Director for NHS Highland.

Educated in Limavady Grammar School and then Queen’s University Belfast, Dr Peters worked at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry / Londonderry for three years before moving to NHS Highland to begin his GP training after qualifying from Queen’s. The following year he ran a single-handed practice on the Isle of Lewis before returning to Grantown as a locum in 1993, becoming a partner in 1995.

Dr Peters has held the post of NHS Highland Medical Director on an interim basis since April this year. He was previously the board’s Associate Medical Director for mental health having worked as a GP for over 25 years.

He was also NHS Highland’s clinical lead for the redesign of health and social care services in Badenoch and Strathspey, which includes the construction of the new Community Hospital in the area.

NHS Highland is one of the fourteen regions of NHS Scotland. Geographically, it is the largest Health Board, covering an area of 32,500 km² and serving 320,000 people. It has 10,000 employees and a budget of £850 million, providing health care to a population spread over an area stretching from John O’Groats to the Mull of Kintyre which is visible from the Antrim coastline.

Keen on the outdoors and on team work, Boyd has been a member of Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team for 24 years, dealing with some of the most challenging conditions to be found in the UK. His passion for the mountains was forged in his school days in Limavady.

Commenting on his appointment Dr Peters said: “I’m delighted to take on this important role. As we deal with the challenges ahead of us I will do everything I can to ensure that clinical leadership will play a key part in reshaping our services.

“Having worked in the Highlands for 28 years I know just how dedicated and committed our clinical teams are and I look forward to working with them and supporting them in all that they do.”

NHS Highland Chief Executive Iain Stewart said: “I am delighted to announce Boyd’s appointment. I have come to know Boyd well during his time as interim Medical Director and I have every confidence that our medical leadership will be in safe hands. He will be a key member of our team and will play an important role as we deliver the new transformation agenda.”

Dr Peters, who takes up the new role with immediate effect, will attend board meetings and provide clinical advice to the NHS Highland board.
