Obituary available online at https://www.bmj.com/content/366/bmj.l5522

Kenneth Aubrey Stewart (known as Aubrey) was born in Belfast on 10 August 1925. He obtained his medical degree at Queen’s University Belfast in 1948 before moving to England to start a career in anaesthesia.

During the war Aubrey was an anaesthetist in the RAF before completing his training as a senior registrar in Wales. Cardiff had one of the few academic units in the country at that time, but much more importantly, it was where Aubrey met his future wife, Susan, a physiotherapist. They were married in 1960 and went on to have three boys.

In 1960, Aubrey was also appointed as a consultant anaesthetist in Leicester, working across all the hospitals in the city. He was a superb role model for many trainees and junior colleagues, and known for having a wonderful rapport with both patients and colleagues.

Outside of work, Aubrey was interested in history especially medical antiques and sport, playing tennis until well into his 80s.

He died peacefully and leaves Susan, their three sons, and three grandchildren.
