GLOBAL EXPERT DELIVERS SCHOOL OF PHARMACY HAMILTON LECTURE AT QUEEN’S

29 November 2019

Lisa A Bero from the University of Sydney, recently delivered the annual School of Pharmacy Hamilton Lecture on the theme of 'Fighting Truth Decay: Building Transparency and Trust in Health Evidence'.

The Hamilton Lecture Series was established in 2017 in memory of Ms Aileen Hamilton, a former member of staff in the School of Pharmacy. Ms Hamilton left a third of her estate as a gift in her will to the School for pharmacy research.

The Lecture recognises outstanding achievement in pharmaceutical science and practice research and aims to enhance and stimulate research culture and dissemination with staff, students and the public.

Speaking ahead of the event, Professor Carmel Hughes, Head of the School of Pharmacy at Queen’s said: “It is an honour for us to have Professor Lisa Bero deliver this year’s Hamilton Lecture.

“A pharmacologist by training, she is also an internationally acclaimed academic in research integrity and we look forward to hearing her thoughts on transparency and trust in health evidence.

“We are also immensely grateful for Aileen’s gift. It has been transformational in its impact – enabling our researchers here at Queen’s School of Pharmacy to continue to lead the field as we focus on medicines to prevent, alleviate or cure diseases.”

Professor Bero is Chair of Medicines Use and Health Outcomes at the School of Pharmacy and Director of the Evidence Policy and Influence Collaborative, Charles Perkins Centre in the University of Sydney.

An expert in examining how science can influence and be translated into clinical practice and health policy, Professor Bero has developed and validated methods for assessing bias in the design, conduct and dissemination of research on pharmaceuticals, tobacco, chemicals, and complex public health interventions.

Currently Senior Editor, Cochrane Public Health and Health Systems Network, her international activities include member and Chair of the World Health Organization (WHO) Essential Medicines Committee and Cochrane Collaboration liaison to WHO.

The School of Pharmacy at Queen’s is ranked as the No.1 in the UK for Pharmacy and Pharmacology Research by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019.
