‘RACE ROUND THE RIVER’ – GET READY FOR THE 5K RUN OF THE YEAR!

11 February 2020

The Deep RiverRock Queen’s 5k ‘Race Round the River’ will take place on Wednesday 25th March 2020 and to encourage participation, Queen’s Sport has started hosting a free programme, Couch 2 5k, each Wednesday night in the weeks leading up to the race.

The route is just short of 3 laps around the Annadale Embankment in South Belfast and finishes outside the gates of Queen’s PEC. Last year's winner was Neil Johnston from Springwell Running Club with a remarkable time of 14:50.

The main event will kick off this year at 7.30pm, with the 3k warm-up race starting at the earlier time of 6.50pm.

This prestigious Race Round the River event is once again supported by main corporate partner Deep RiverRock with additional funding from Belfast City Council – Support for Sport Fund.

The Race is recognised by Athletics NI as the Northern Ireland and Ulster Championship 5k Race for 2020. The organisers look forward to another fast and competitive race along the unique route around the River Lagan in Belfast.

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Daniel Baker said: “We’re absolutely delighted to support this fantastic event which takes place in such a unique landmark of our city, the River Lagan.

“This inclusive event encourages people of all abilities to get out and get active with the option of either the 5k or 3k run. I wish all participants the best of luck.”

Kevin Murray, Participation Sport Manager at Queen’s said: “This popular race has grown to capacity over the years and we encourage runners of all abilities to sign up early to avoid disappointment and be part of one of the best 5k races in Northern Ireland.

“The 3k ‘warm-up’ race also offers a shorter route for junior athletes and participants of all abilities to get involved in a special night of running along the banks of the River Lagan in Belfast.”

Captain of Queen’s Athletics Club, Nathan Lindsay commented: “We work very hard with University staff, race partners and our student volunteers to put on a race that everyone enjoys and feels part of the Queen’s community.

“This year all entrants will receive a specially branded free t-shirt and post-race hospitality available after the race in the main hall of the PEC. Nathan added: “This is one event at Queen’s not to miss!”

Hilary Hughes, Marketing Manager, Deep RiverRock said: “We are delighted to offer continued support to this fantastic ‘Race Round the River’ event at Queen’s University.

“Deep RiverRock will be on hand on the day to keep racers hydrated with our 100% recycled bottles which are ‘Made to make a difference’.

“This is the latest wave of communication from Deep RiverRock to consumers; highlighting the importance of creating a circular economy. It encourages everyone to play their part by making small changes; like choosing a bottle made from recycled materials and then continuing the recycling journey.”

The free Couch 2 5k programme is designed to help competitors complete the race in the best possible time and is open to everyone, regardless of current ability level.

Aside from spectating, non-runners, or those not intending to participle in this year’s event, can still get involved. The organisers need volunteers on race day from 2pm–9pm with to help marshal the event and help with pack collections.

Students volunteering at the Deep RiverRock Race will earn credit towards their degree plus award. Those who would like to help out should contact athletics@qub.ac.uk to let organisers know their availability on the day.
