QUEEN’S TO HOST ROUNDTABLE ON WOMEN IN MUSIC TECHNOLOGY

The Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) at Queen’s is set to host a roundtable discussion and debate on Wednesday 21 November on women in music technology around the world.

A number of leading international organisations will be taking part in the event including: the Female Laptop Orchestra (UK), Women in Music Tech (USA), WoNoMute (Norway), Sonora (Brazil) and Yorkshire Sound Women Network (UK).

The roundtable panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A session which will explore transversal topics and open issues in the field such as women role models, visibility of women’s work, mentoring, collaboration, funding, impact assessment, and sustainability.

The event has been organised by Dr Franziska Schroeder from the School of Arts, English and Languages and SARC at Queen’s, who said: “This event will showcase the role of women in music technology around the world, and discuss a number of challenges which women working in music technology face.

“We are delighted to welcome so many leading women in the music industry from a number of high-profile international organisations to take part in this timely discussion and debate, and we hope to learn how we can better collaborate and champion each other." 

The roundtable debate – which is open to the public and free to attend – will take place on Wednesday 21 November 2018, 1pm – 2pm at the Sonic Arts Research Centre at Queen’s.

The discussion will be followed by a concert on Thursday 22 – admission to which is also open to all and free of charge – in the Sonic Lab at SARC.

Founded in 2001, the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) is a globally recognised institute for music-based practice and research, bringing together researchers in composition, performance, musicology, computing for musical applications, acoustics and perception, sound recording, interaction design, broadcast, critical improvisation studies, sound art, aesthetics and media theory.

A purpose designed building with a state-of-the-art Sonic Laboratory and multichannel studios was opened by Karlheinz Stockhausen in 2004 during the Sonorities Festival, which is hosted biennially by SARC.
