It has been a challenging year, but we have a lot to be proud of at Queen's. To celebrate the University's achievements in 2020, we have rounded up our top stories, from essential Covid-19 research, the appointment of our new Chancellor, Student of the Year, and more.

Hillary Rodham Clinton appointed as new Chancellor Celebrating 175 years of Queen's
Secretary Clinton, who received an honorary Doctorate of Law from Queen’s in 2018, became the University’s first female Chancellor. As part of the celebrations, Queen’s awarded Honorary Degrees to four Presidents of the Learned Societies in the UK and Ireland.

University receives Queen’s Anniversary Prize £700m City Deal announced to aid Covid-19 recovery
The Centre for Shared Education at Queen’s and Belfast Metropolitan College awarded prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize. Belfast Region City Deal partners, including Queen's, announced new investment for infrastructure, regeneration, and Covid-19 recovery.

World-class hockey facility opened at Queen's Queen's launches campaign to aid Covid-19 rehabilitation 
The £1.2m investment will enable the University to meet the growing needs of the sport and support student hockey at all levels.  Performers and musicians joined forces to thank frontline NHS staff and raise funds for those recovering from Covid-19.

Student frontline workers awarded Student of the Year Marie-Thérèse McGivern awarded Graduate of the Year
Over 700 students at Queen's who graduated early to help the NHS fight the coronavirus pandemic, were awarded the AIB (NI) Queen's Student of the Year title. Marie-Thérèse McGivern, Chair of Belfast Maritime Trust and former Principal of Belfast MET, was awarded the AIB (NI) Queen's Graduate of the Year title.

Queen's awarded UK grant to find Covid-19 treatment How microplastic pollution is threatening biodiversity
Researchers at the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine were awarded £295,626 to find urgent treatment for Covid-19. Queen's research has highlighted the effects of plastic pollution on hermit crabs, which play an important role in balancing marine ecosystems.

Caroline McElnay, Director of Public Health, New Zealand Suzie Arbuthnot wins BBC’s Best Home Cook
As Chair of the Pandemic Influenza Technical Advisory Group, Dr McElnay has been at the forefront of New Zealand's pandemic response. A chartered accountant who graduated in Economics and Management, Suzie has baked, sautéed and roasted her way to victory in the BBC’s Best Home Cook.
