'THINK TANK' APPOINTMENT FOR QUEEN'S PROFESSOR

Queen’s Professor of Politics Beverley Milton-Edwards, who is regarded as one of the world's leading experts on violence, terrorism and security, has been awarded a Visiting Fellowship at the Think Tank, Brookings.

During her Fellowship Professor Milton-Edwards she will undertake a project on Security Governance in the Middle East and the Challenge of Islamism, while producing policy briefs and serving as an active member of the Brookings global community.

Earlier this year, Professor Milton-Edwards was one of 42 distinguished UK academics to be elected to the Academy of Social Sciences in recognition of her outstanding contribution to research in Political Science.  

Speaking about the appointment Professor Milton-Edwards said: "The award of the Brookings Fellowship and the election to the Academy of Social Sciences is the highest tribute anyone working in the social sciences can aspire to. As a political scientist of the Middle East and Islamism working at Queen's, it is significant recognition of the importance of supporting such vital research in uncertain times."

Brookings is recognised as the number one Think Tank in the world for its work on international development. It has a long-established established reputation for quality, independence and impact while conducting in-depth research and analysis that produces solutions and ideas.

Beverley Milton-Edwards has been at Queen's since 1991 and is a member of The Senator George J Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice at Queen's, where her research focuses on the contemporary Middle East, Islamism, violence, terrorism and security.

Studies on radical Islamic movements including Hamas, Hizballah, al-Qaeda and more recently ISIS has resulted in Professor Milton-Edward producing a number of seminal research publications and earning a role in informing and advising some of the highest  diplomatic decision and policy-making in the Middle East. Her research into the security challenges presented by radical Islamist groups in the wake of the Arab Spring, is currently contributing to global policy debates.

Professor Crawford Gribben, Acting Head of the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics at Queen's, said: "Beverley's appointment to the Brookings Institution is a signal of her outstanding achievements in the field of terrorism and security studies.

“It is further evidence of the cutting-edge global significance of so much of the work being carried out by the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Queen's."
