The Development and Alumni Relations Office is dedicated to promoting good environmental practises. Please read below to find out how staff, students and visitors can contribute to reducing our carbon impact.

RECYCLE

There are a number of recycling points within the Directorate. These enable us to recycle the majority of our waste.

  • Paper: Within all DARO offices there are labelled paper recycling points in which confidential waste can be placed, (either shredded or non-shredded)
  • Non-confidential: We also collect waste A4 paper (printed on one side only) for reuse as notepaper by staff. Collection boxes are located beside the networked printer in the Main and Major Gifts Offices and beside the printer in room 02013
  • Cardboard: Should be fully flat packed and left neatly in the labelled area behind the door in the second floor kitchen for collection by cleaning staff
  • Plastic and metal:  Empty plastic milk containers and drinks bottles can be placed in the recycling bins located near the lift on the third floor and in the second floor kitchen. There is also a recycling bin for metal food and drinks cans in the second floor kitchen
  • Mixed glass and batteries: Labelled bins for these items are located in the second floor kitchen
  • Printer cartridges/toner: All Xerox cartridges/toners are automatically returned direct to the supplier
  • Envelopes: The team collect incoming envelopes for reuse where possible
  • Books:  The University encourages reuse rather than recycle . Unwanted books that are in good condition can be donated to an organisation called Better World Books, which generated funding for literacy charities both within the UK and around the world through the sale of second hand books. For full details on this and other book recycling  schemes click here.
  • Stamps: A stamp collection folder is located at DARO reception. This year used stamps will be donated to Parkinson's UK
Further information about recycling at the University can be found on the A-Z Guide to Waste and Recycling.

TRAVEL

If you are travelling to, from or around campus for work, study or as a visitor attending a meeting/event, we recommend that you use a sustainable form of travel.

  • The University is well served by Translink bus and rail services. Click here to find out more
  • The Travel to Work Loan scheme provides staff with an interest-free loan towards the purchase of an annual travel card for the purpose of commuting to work via bus or train
  • If you need to drive to work on a regular basis, have you considered car sharing? The University's Car Share Scheme has been developed to enable staff and students to find a potential car sharer. Or why not consider travelling with a colleague/friend if you're both going to the same area for meetings, interviews or to attend an event?
  • The University provides secure cycle parking for staff; a list of locations can be found here. Shower and changing facilities free of charge to staff are also available throughout the University. Locations of these, and the form to request access, can be found here

  • The Cycle+Scheme allows staff to purchase a bicycle and safety equipment and receive National Insurance and Income Tax discounts through a salary sacrifice scheme. The cycle mileage allowance for travelling by bicycle on University business is 20p per mile

  • If you live within a couple of miles of the University why not try walking? You will be helping the enviroment, as well as reducing traffic  congestion and availing of various health benefits
