NEW STUDENT CENTRE – PUBLIC CONSULTATION OPEN

28 September 2018

Hundreds of members of the public, University staff, students and graduates attended an event at Queen's to see for themselves the proposals for the new world-class Student Centre – including a new Students’ Union facility – on Thursday, 27 September 2018.

The Public Consultation took place in the Canada Room in the main Lanyon Building at Queen’s, and enabled visitors to view detailed proposals, discuss plans with architects woriking on the project and provide feedback on the new state-of-the-art facility.

The building is due to open in the 2021/2022 academic year and will support enhanced student welfare, learning, development, entrepreneurship and employment opportunities.

The new Students’ Union will include vibrant social and commercial spaces such as the SU Shop, the SU Bar, a Mandela Hall entertainment venue, and state-of-the-art facilities for our clubs and societies.

In an email to staff of the University inviting them to the event, Professor David S. Jones, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education and Students) said: ‘Supporting and developing our students is a key priority.

‘The new facility will provide further opportunities for students to engage with, and benefit from, our representation, advice, student volunteering and entrepreneurship services, as well as being a social hub for the University to improve accessibility and student interaction in the heart of the campus.

‘The project reinforces our commitment to student support and development. We will continue to develop graduates and create future leaders who will underpin the growth of the knowledge economy in Northern Ireland.’

For those unable to attend the event the plans are now available online (see below for full URL) and individual comments can be sent to publicengagement@qub.ac.uk. All comments and feedback must be received on, or before Thursday, 11 October 2018.

Any comments made are not representations to the Planning Authority and will not in any way affect an individual’s statutory right to make representations to the Planning Authority, with regard to any application submitted to them, in respect of this proposal.
