ANNUAL MEETING OF CONVOCATION – GIVING QUEEN’S GRADUATES A VOICE

31 October 2019

Graduates of Queen’s are invited to the Annual Meeting of Convocation which this year takes place at 6pm on Thursday November 14, in the Canada Room and Council Chamber in the main Lanyon Building at the University.

Queen’s graduates are automatically enrolled as members of Convocation – a word which comes from the Latin convocare meaning ‘calling together’ – upon graduation.

Speaking ahead of this year's AGM, Chair of Convocation Eoin McMullan (5th from left above) said: "Each year the Annual General Meeting gives graduates and staff an opportunity to reconnect with their Alma Mater and give an opinion on matters of the University.

"This year I am particularly pleased to welcome Professor Ian Greer, President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen's, to deliver a State of the University address, highlighting activities since he took up post and outlining plans for the future.

"I look forward to welcoming you all on 14th November."

Convocation has the right to ‘discuss and pronounce’ on any matter relating to the University, thereby giving graduates a say in the life of their alma mater, wherever they are in the world.

Ahead of the Annual Meeting Standing Committee has published a review of Convocation activities and outline proposals for the future.

At the Annual Meeting members will elect Ordinary Members of the Standing Committee, review Standing Committee activities during 2018/19, discuss motions and hear from this year’s keynote speaker.

Joining the Annual Meeting as keynote speaker for the first time will be Professor Ian Greer, President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s, who will update attendees on recent developments at the University. Professor Greer took up post as Vice-Chancellor in August 2018. In recent weeks he has attended graduate events in New York and London.

Membership of Convocation includes all graduates of Queen’s, the University’s Chancellor, Pro-Chancellors, Vice-Chancellor and members of Senate, the University’s governing body.

The Chair of Convocation has a seat on Senate, so graduates can make their opinions known simply by raising them at the Annual Meeting.
