US PRESIDENTS AND THE STARS AT NIGHT ARE AMONG SHORT COURSES NOW ENROLLING AT QUEEN'S

As the US Presidential race approaches its climax, Queen’s is offering an insight into the workings of the Oval Office through its 2016 autumn/winter Open Learning Programme, which begins w/c 26 September.

The American Presidency in the Twentieth Century is a 10-week course exploring how the role of President has changed over time, transitioning from a post with significant limitations, to becoming one of the most influential positions in the world.

It is one of almost 300 short courses on offer through Queen’s new Open Learning Programme, many of which run in the evenings or at weekends, and which begin on 26 September, 2016.

Highlights of the autumn/winter schedule include Our Place in the Universe, which offers budding stargazers an insight into what lies beyond our planet, and promises a better understanding of the night sky as the dark evenings draw in. And in the year that marks the 400th anniversary of The Bard’s death, Playing Shakespeare takes a look at his work in a fresh, exciting way, through practical acting courses exploring plays including Antony and Cleopatra and The Merchant of Venice.

Dr Cathal McManus, Co-Director of Open Learning at Queen’s School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work, said: “Queen’s Open Learning Programme aims to connect with the issues that are being thought about in wider society and engage in important debates.

“We offer short courses on a huge range of topics. From Languages to Wine-Tasting, First Aid to World Literature, History to Social Media, we make a huge effort to cater for all tastes and interests.

“Whether you want to learn a new skill, broaden your knowledge or try a new hobby, Open Learning at Queen’s offers a short course for everyone, irrespective of educational background. We offer informal learning in a relaxed setting, with concession rates for those on state benefits including state pension, and support services are available for people with disabilities.”
