In 1958 he graduated with a BSc in Anatomy, before going on to complete his Bachelor of Medicine in 1961 and Doctor of Medicine in 1975.

During his professional career, Billy was a consultant in both the Belfast City Hospital and Royal Maternity Hospital. He had a keen interest in obstetrics and gynaecology, and was key to a number of medical developments including the introduction of ultrasound to Northern Ireland obstetrics and establishing the first HRT clinic in the province.

Billy went on to become Emeritus Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Queen’s until his retirement in 2000.

He is survived by his wife Anne, his children Christine, Andrew, Gillian and Karen, and nine grandchildren.
