Dr Boodhiman Jay Radhakeesoon, MB BCh BAO (died 2 October 2020, aged 86)

Obituary provided by classmate and friend, Dr Duncan Kerr

Boodhiman Radhakeesoon died at his home in Mauritius on 2 October 2020. He entered the Faculty of Medicine at Queen’s, as I did, in 1957 and graduated in 1964/5. After working in Northern Ireland for about 3 years he returned to Mauritius where he had a distinguished career, partly in general practice and also running the family planning department for the Mauritian Government.

He went to New York at the invitation of the World Health Organisation to receive the Gold Medal for reducing the average family size in Mauritius from more than 7 to 2.7. When he qualified he went home to get married, then brought his wife back to Northern Ireland where she went to Queen’s and graduated with a BA in English. When she returned to Mauritius she taught English as well as raising her family and became a headmistress.
