University Challenge - Queen's defeat Cambridge!

A team of students from Queen's is just one match away from a coveted semi-final place in this year's University Challenge, after a narrow 20 point win over their Cambridge rivals on Monday 03 March.

After they suffered a defeat in the previous round Queen’s made a good comeback in their most recent appearance in the legendary academic quiz hosted by Jeremy Paxman. While it was the lowest combined score of the current series they beat Clare College, Cambridge 125 to 105 and now need just one further victory to advance to the next stage.

Earlier in the year Queen’s saw off stiff opposition from the University of Aberdeen (round 1) and Downing College, Cambridge (round 2) before losing to University of Southampton in their first appearance in the quarter-finals. One more win, however, will see them qualify for the semi-finals.

Regular participants, Queen’s last won the legendary academic quiz show in 1981 when it was hosted by Bamber Gascoigne.

After a slow start, Queen’s current team of Joseph Greenwood, Suzanne Cobain, Gareth Gamble and Alexander Green answered questions on topics including four-letter suffixes, the animal kingdom, history, violin concertos and mathematicians to enable them to claim the spoils.
